I have painted in watercolour for over forty years, inspired by
the natural world around us and especially the big
landscapes and seascapes of Britain’s wild places.
Watercolour is so good for conveying mood, perhaps above
all in skies. Since moving to a small village close to
the Mendip Hills in Somerset, England, I have also
become fascinated by the challenge of painting
wildflowers and meadow grasses as well as local scenes.
My present focus tends to be either the “very big” or
the “very small” – two extremes of visual experience,
each charged with its wonder and power to rejuvenate the
spirit.
Two of my favourite quotations:
“The landscape is not seen for itself, but as a
commentary upon the human condition, as a speculation
upon the tension between order and disorder” – J.M.W.
Turner (1775-1851)
“Painting is a blind man’s profession. He paints not
what he sees, but what he feels, what he tells himself
about what he has seen” – Pablo Picasso (1881-1973)
My work has been exhibited widely including the Royal
West of England Academy in Bristol and many local
exhibitions. I held my own exhibition of Cotswold
landscapes at the Colston Gallery in Fairford,
Gloucestershire, in 1984.
You probably know that modern technology makes possible
comparatively cheap limited-edition prints or cards from
original works of art. I never do this, nor will I
attempt to “copy” a picture or photograph. Every
painting shown here is an original watercolour, never to
be repeated, reproduced, or copied – at least, not by
me!
The paintings displayed here are divided into three
groups:
·Gallery
1
Landscapes of the English West Country including
Somerset, Devon and Cornwall.
·Gallery 2
Wildflowers, grasses, and local scenes “Close to
Mendip”.
·Gallery
3
Landscapes of the West Highlands and Islands of
Scotland.
